Stumpy Gully Road on the Mornington Peninsula is a good road to travel for cellar doors.  It boasts five either directly on the road or very near to it – and all of them are worth a visit.

B’darra Estate always has a good selection of wines open to taste, all made at the vineyard by the owners, including some fruit wines – rhubarb which is worth trying.  They’ve put a lot of effort into the grounds, developing a wet land that attracts a wide range of birds.  Usually there are special offers at the cellar door – buy a case, get a case free which is generous, and they do food platters.  When I visited I had a very good conversation with Gavin, one of the owners.  Wines start at $16 for Pinot Gris going up to $45 for the 2003 Reserve Shiraz.  I bought a 2010 Pinot Gris and a 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon.  On the MPVA map. Q to S – good value.

Zante Estate is further down Stumpy Gully Road heading south.  I remember visiting this cellar door a couple of years ago and not being that impressed, but things have improved.  Catherine was on the cellar door and we had a very good conversation about the wines and vineyard.  It’s owned by a Greek family and there is Greek themed food available.  I’ve never eaten there but I liked the idea of the Greek mixed barbecue.  Prices range from $13 for some of the older Pinots up to $40 for the 2001 Shiraz.  Do try before you buy.  Not on the map.  Q to S.

Even further south down Stumpy Gully Road is my of my favourite places, Northway Downs.  I gave Northway Downs the “Best Value Dining” award in 2011.  Northway Downs is not really about the wine – although I think they do a decent job with their Pinot Noir and Chardnnay.  It’s about the wine, the food, the music, the people.  The best way to approach Northway Downs is to book yourself in for Sunday lunch and just go with the flow.  You’ll have a ball.  Austrian themed.  On the MPVA map. S – great fun
